Did you know?! 🤔 Ornate ghost pipefish can change their colour to match their surroundings! These interesting relatives of seahorses float gracefully head-down among crinoids and corals, often so well camouflaged that divers swim right past without noticing. What makes them truly fascinating is their ability to change colour to match their environment. This transformation isn’t instant like an octopus or cuttlefish – instead, it takes several days to weeks for their bodies to gradually adapt, shifting from bright yellows, oranges and blacks to whites, browns, or even nearly transparent forms. A fully yellow female, the final stage of transformation! This fascinating transformation isn’t just about colour. Ribbon eels are protandric hermaphrodites — they begin life as males and later transition into females as they mature. It’s a unique adaptation that increases reproductive success in the wild.
