Extreme weather washes sediment and pollution into the sea, storms break apart fragile reef structures, and heat stress drives corals to bleach. Each impact alone is damaging. Together, they leave reefs with little chance to recover without help. At DiveRACE, we wanted to be part of the solution: We started a coral restoration in Phuket, installing Super Star structures and planting coral fragments to give damaged reefs a secure base to regrow. Did you know that some sharks can stop swimming and still breathe? 🦈 White tip reef sharks are among the few shark species that can rest motionless on the seafloor. Instead of relying on constant forward movement to push water over their gills, they can use a method called buccal pumping — actively drawing water into their mouths and over their gills while staying still. This adaptation allows them to spend long periods of time beneath coral bommies or resting in the sand during the day, conserving energy before becoming more active hunters at night. Did you know?! 🤔 Ornate ghost pipefish can change their colour to match their surroundings! These interesting relatives of seahorses float gracefully head-down among crinoids and corals, often so well camouflaged that divers swim right past without noticing. What makes them truly fascinating is their ability to change colour to match their environment. This transformation isn’t instant like an octopus or cuttlefish – instead, it takes several days to weeks for their bodies to gradually adapt, shifting from bright yellows, oranges and blacks to whites, browns, or even nearly transparent forms. Swipe across! 👉 These ribbon eels aren’t different species – they’re the same animal at different stages of life! ▪️ Juveniles start out jet black with a bright yellow dorsal fin 🔹 Adult males turn electric blue, retaining the yellow dorsal fin 🔸And the rarest sight? A fully yellow female, the final stage of transformation! This fascinating transformation isn’t just about colour. Ribbon eels are protandric hermaphrodites — they begin life as males and later transition into females as they mature. It’s a unique adaptation that increases reproductive success in the wild.
