More Than Just Diving: What to Do in Thailand Around Your Similan Liveaboard Adventure

If you’re planning a scuba diving trip with DiveRACE Class X to the spectacular Similan Islands – you’re in for an unforgettable experience. But why stop there? Let’s explore some options of what to do in Thailand around your liveaboard trip!

When most people think of Thailand, they imagine turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and world-class diving. And while the underwater world is a major draw – especially in the Andaman Sea – there’s so much more to discover on land.

Southern Thailand is brimming with natural beauty, cultural charm, and off-the-beaten-path adventures that make it the perfect place to explore before or after your liveaboard. From jungle lakes to limestone cliffs, beach towns to floating villages – your diving trip can be just one highlight in a truly well-rounded holiday adventure.

Before or After You Dive: Explore the Best of Southern Thailand

Your liveaboard might be the main event, but there’s plenty to discover on land. The Similan Island season from the 15th of October through to the 15th of May is the best time of year to explore Southern Thailand. During this time, this area of Thailand has the least amount of rainfall.

Here are some top spots to consider adding to your itinerary:

Phuket – Your gateway to the Andaman Sea

Most visitors to the area fly into Phuket, and it’s well worth spending a couple of days here. Wander through Phuket Old Town with its colorful Sino-Portuguese shophouses, visit intricate temples and Big Buddha viewpoint, grab sunset drinks at one of the island’s many beach clubs, or hop on a boat to nearby Coral or Racha Islands for some easy snorkeling.

Khao Lak – Tranquil beaches & pier access

If you prefer to escape the rush of Phuket, just 90 minutes north of Phuket airport is Khao Lak – a calm, laid-back coastal town – and it’s where you’ll board your DiveRACE liveaboard from Thap Lamu Pier. Khao Lak, and nearby Biang Niang, is a perfect place to spend a few nights before or after your liveaboard to enjoy uncrowded beaches, lush jungle waterfalls, local night markets, live music events and beautiful sunsets.

Tip: there are many beautiful beachfront resorts to choose from. Nang Thong and Biang Niang beach are ideal locations walking distance from restaurants and bars, and you can spend the day at one of the quiet local beach restaurants a short journey north of Khao Lak.

Khao Sok National Park – One of Thailand’s hidden gems

Need a reset? Head inland to Khao Sok, just 60 minutes North of Khao Lak, where you’ll find dramatic limestone cliffs, rainforests, and floating bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake. Kayak at sunrise, hike through the jungle, or simply unwind in one of Thailand’s most peaceful places.

Tip: Khao Sok can be visited in a day trip – and it’s well worth it – but overnight stays on the lake add a whole new adventure!

Phang Nga Bay – Limestone cliffs and secret lagoons

Just east of Phuket lies Phang Nga, famous for its otherworldly karst mountain formations. Kayak through sea caves, visit hidden lagoons, and explore the floating village of Koh Panyee. A day trip here adds a dose of wonder to any itinerary.

Tip: stop off on the way at Samet Nangshe viewpoint for the most stunning views of Phang Nga bay!

Further south, Krabi offers gorgeous beaches, mangrove forests, and access to Railay, a rock climber’s paradise only reachable by boat. It’s a perfect place to end your journey on a high – or unwind completely.
