Diving responsibly: New Regulations for the Similan Islands

Great news for fellow ocean lovers! The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has officially passed new laws applying to Coral Reef areas in Thailand, with restrictions on underwater camera use for inexperienced divers, in an attempt to minimise the impact of tourism on the fragile marine ecosystems. Before you join us on a trip with MV DiveRACE Class X, let’s get familiar with the new regulations for the Similan Islands and Surin Islands National parks!

New scuba diving regulations:

  • Underwater cameras are to be used only by divers with the following certification/experience levels: Advanced certification (RAID/PADI/SSI or equivalent) and above, OR divers with a minimum of 40 verified logged dives.
  • Cameras are not to be taken during training dives, unless a dedicated photographer is assigned.

Existing scuba diving regulations:

  • Limited number of divers and tourists allowed into the National Park. This is controlled by the National Park tickets purchased by the tour operators.
  • Guided dives only! All diving within the Similan Islands and Surin Islands National Park must be done under supervision of a dive guide. The maximum ratio is 4:1.
  • No touch policy – divers and snorkelers are prohibited from touching any marine life. This includes laying on the seabed or reef, touching or taking corals and shells, and chasing or stressing animals.
  • No feeding of marine animals.

Snorkeling regulations:

  • – Life jackets are now mandatory for all snorkelers over coral reef areas, unless the snorkeler is a certified diver with Advanced certification or above.
  • Snorkeling must be undertaken only in areas with a minimum 2 metres of water depth over the coral reef.
  • – No standing on the reef or seabed. Fins must be used responsibly and not used to stand on the reef.
New regulations for the Similan Islands

Why have new regulations been imposed?

The Similan Islands are under increasing pressure from dive and snorkel tourism, threatening the National Park’s delicate environment. Numerous reports have been made about irresponsible tour operators allowing unethical practices whilst snorkeling and diving. The new regulations for the Similan Islands aim to further minimise the impact on the environment from tour operators, and in particular, the divers and snorkelers themselves.
