REEF UPDATE – 21 May 2026

On the 21st of May 2026, we conducted our latest check up of our Phuket coral restoration site following an oil spill from a sunken cargo ship and a period of elevated sea temperatures.

Encouragingly, no visible impacts from the nearby oil spill were observed at the restoration area, despite reports of oil contamination on surrounding beaches.

The survey did, however, reveal signs of coral bleaching linked to elevated sea temperatures across the Andaman Sea. Approximately 15–20% of coral fragments showed signs of stress, while the majority remained healthy and continued growing.

Parts of the surrounding natural reef appeared more heavily affected than sections of the restoration site itself. While conditions remain challenging, the survey highlighted the resilience of the restoration site and the importance of continued monitoring. We will continue tracking coral health and sharing updates as the reef responds to changing conditions.
