DiveRACE Safety Series: Training, Experience & Safety Culture

Blog / Knowledge / DiveRACE Safety Series: Training, Experience & Safety Culture

Great diving starts long before you enter the water. It begins with training, preparation, and the culture built around every trip.

At DiveRACE, safety is not treated as a checklist. It is part of how we operate every day. From diver training and trip planning to guest comfort and onboard procedures, every detail plays a role in creating a safer and more enjoyable experience exploring the Similan and Surin Islands.

Because in diving, confidence and safety usually go hand in hand.

Training Matters More Than Many Divers Realise

Certification is only the beginning of becoming a capable diver. Real confidence comes from continuing to learn, adapt, and improve your awareness underwater.

That is why DiveRACE offers RAID training courses directly on board while diving world-class locations including the Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, and Richelieu Rock. This allows divers to build experience in a real-world environment while exploring some of Thailand’s best dive sites.

Courses available on board include programs such as:

These courses are especially valuable in the Similan Islands, where conditions can vary significantly between dive sites. One dive may involve calm coral gardens and shallow granite boulders, while the next could include stronger currents, deeper pinnacles, and fast-moving pelagic action.

Unlike large training groups often seen in busy tourist destinations, our courses are intentionally kept small. This gives instructors more time to focus on each diver individually.

Our instructors bring years of professional diving experience to every course. Many have worked hundreds or thousands of dives in varying conditions. That real experience matters when teaching divers how to stay calm, controlled, and situationally aware underwater.

Training should never feel like simply completing tasks for a certification card. It should build good habits that stay with you long after the trip ends.

Experience On Board Affects Dive Safety

A comfortable diver is often a calmer diver. And calmer divers usually make better decisions underwater. That is one reason why vessel layout and onboard systems matter so much during a liveaboard trip.

MV DiveRACE Class X has been designed to improve diver flow, organisation, and overall comfort throughout the trip. Large dive preparation areas help reduce crowding before dives, while dedicated camera preparation stations and separate rinse tanks help keep sensitive equipment organised and protected.

These details may sound small, but they do reduce stress and distractions before entering the water. Being prepared is always the key to prevent unfortunate accidents from happening.

The vessel also features spacious social areas, comfortable cabins, and practical diver-focused layouts designed around the realities of liveaboard operations. When divers are properly rested, hydrated, and organised, it contributes directly to safer diving conditions throughout the week.

Our custom-designed workboats also continue that philosophy in the water. While we covered them in detail earlier in this series, their design plays a major role in diver comfort and safety during entries and exits. Read more about them here.

A Dedicated Guest Experience Manager

Dive safety is not only about what happens underwater. Good communication on the surface matters just as much.

That is why MV DiveRACE Class X includes a dedicated Customer Service Manager on board. Their role is to oversee guest experience and help coordinate day-to-day operations throughout the trip.

On a remote liveaboard route like the Similan Islands, clear communication becomes even more important. Guests spend several days at sea, often far from the mainland, so having a reliable point of contact onboard helps create a more relaxed and organised environment.

Whether it is equipment support, scheduling, dietary requirements, or general assistance, clear communication helps prevent unnecessary stress during the trip. A relaxed and informed guest is usually a safer diver.

Strong onboard organisation also allows dive staff and instructors to focus more attention on dive operations, briefings, and in-water supervision. Our crew communicate and work together to ensure a seamless guest experience during the trips.

Safety Culture Extends Beyond the Dive Deck

Safety culture is often invisible when done correctly. It becomes part of the atmosphere onboard.

The diving industry has changed significantly over the years. Modern equipment, improved training, and better awareness have all contributed to safer diving practices worldwide. However, personal responsibility still plays a major role in every trip. At DiveRACE, we encourage guests to approach diving with the right mindset throughout the week.

Alcohol is available onboard for guests to enjoy after diving activities are complete for the day. However, heavy drinking before diving is strongly discouraged. Alcohol can affect judgement, hydration, reaction time, and overall physical condition underwater.

Hydration is another major factor many divers underestimate, especially in Thailand’s tropical climate. Heat, sun exposure, repetitive diving, and travel can all contribute to dehydration faster than many people realise. To help with this, electrolyte drinks and hydration stations are available onboard throughout the trip.

Smoking is limited to designated areas only. This helps maintain guest comfort while reducing unnecessary exposure around shared spaces onboard. Divers should also understand that smoking may impact overall fitness, breathing efficiency, and recovery during repetitive diving schedules.

Although cannabis is legal in Thailand, it is not permitted onboard MV DiveRACE Class X.

The Goal Is Simple

The best Similan Islands liveaboard trips are not built around rushing divers into the water. They are built around preparation, awareness, and good experiences from start to finish.

Training builds confidence. Good systems reduce stress. Strong safety culture improves decision-making.

When those things come together, diving becomes safer, more comfortable, and ultimately far more enjoyable.

That philosophy continues to shape every part of the DiveRACE experience. Book your next liveaboard in the Similan Islands with us here.
